Staff Biographies

William Chavarin, Ed.M.
As a teacher, administrator and coach, William Chavarin has
worked exclusively in urban charter academies and inner city
public schools inspiring students of color in the subjects of
mathematics and humanities. Co-founder of a non-profit
summer program created to reach and teach over 400 low-
income students academically and athletically, Chavarin is
committed to changing the face of public education. Currently,
Chavarin is a public school administrator of a federal discretionary
grant designed to increase the number of low-income students
who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary
education. He earned his undergraduate degree from California
State University at Monterey and his Masters in Educational
Leadership and Administration from San Jose State University.
Chavarin holds a California Multiple Subject Credential from
California State University, East Bay.
Kevin Taylor, Ed.M., M.A.
With over 12 years of experience as a lead teacher,
administrator, founding principal and coach, Kevin Taylor is
known for his educational investments in urban communities
located in the cities of Los Angeles, Oakland and Stockton, CA.
Working with both charters and traditional public schools, Taylor
was selected as the founding principal for Langston Hughes
Academy and used similar talents to co-found a non-profit
dedicated to serving students of color in the East Bay in the
areas of athletics and academics. Taylor earned his
undergraduate degree from California State University,
Northridge. He also holds two Masters, one in Educational
Leadership and Administration from San Jose State University
and the other in Multicultural Education from National University.
He is a graduate of Harvard University’s Urban Principal Institute
and holds a California Teaching Credential in Social Science.
Troyvoi Hicks, Ed.M.
Since his leadership days in junior high, when he protested city-
wide cutbacks of after school activities at an Oakland Public
School board meeting, Troyvoi Hicks has been passionate about
serving young people. After teaching and administrating at a
progressive private middle school in Southern California, he
joined the charter school movement in his hometown Oakland,
California and assumed the role of founding principal at Lionel
Wilson College Preparatory Academy for 6 years. Hicks
witnessed his first two graduating classes earn a 100% four-year
college acceptance rate while his similar school's state ranking
grew from a 1 to an 8 (out of a possible 10) in just 5 years.
With over 12 years as a teacher, administrator and middle and
high school principal, Hicks began coaching and consulting with
schools, districts and organizations to improve school leadership
and student achievement in public schools. He earned his
undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his Masters
in Educational Leadership and Administration from San Jose
State University.
